Healthy eating tips from a Celebrity Nutritionist

Celebrity trainer Andrea Orbeck has motivated and trained thousands of people on how to live their healthiest life. A former member of the Canadian women’s national bobsled team, the trainer has worked with such famous Hollywood hard bodies as Becki Newton, Usher, Alicia Silverstone, Seal and Kimora Lee Simmons and trained svelte supermodels Heidi Klum, Karolina Kurkova and Doutzen Kroes.

Known as the “muscle whisperer,” Andrea holds certification in intracellular physiology, postural assessment and myofascial release therapy. Below the super star strength trainer shares eight favorite Healthy Eating Tips from Celeb Nutritionist tips, usually reserved for her celebrity client, on how to kick off a healthier 2011:

1. snacking is a hard habit to break…so don’t!

It’s important to always keep healthy snacks around to avoid the fattening cookies and candy that you will taunt you at most holiday parties. I’m a huge fan of popchips when I’m really craving a snack. They have less than half the fat of regular fried chips and I actually love the way they taste, unlike baked chips. I like to think of popchips as my ‘get out of jail free card!

2. drink water!

We know you hear it all year long, but it’s especially important this time of year. With the drop in temperature and the increased heat in your homes, you want to make sure not to get dehydrated. Not only does water suppress the appetite and aide in digestion, it’s also a remedy for headaches and hydrates your skin to diminish the signs of aging.

3. watch your alcohol consumption!

Did you know that alcohol contains almost the same calories per gram as fat? Not to mention, it is extremely high in sugar when you mix it with soda and juice. If alcoholic drinks are a must, try mixing them with seltzer or diet sodas.

4. get out of the house!

Bundle up go for a walk, go ice skating, or even shopping. Any extra activity helps, so even a 10 minute walk before dinner counts for something! This is also a great time of year to plan activities to do with the family to stay fit and spend quality time together. Build a snow fort, have a snowball fight or bust out that newest version of the fitness video game for everyone to participate in. Bottom line: if you have fun you’ll burn more calories!

5. don't skip meals!

It's tempting to skip meals to make up for the larger meals you will be eating during the holidays. Don’t forget the empty-stomach rule - if you're starving, your rational mind will be unavailable for healthy food choices. Eat small meals all day to avoid going crazy at the buffet table or have a lighter lunch leading up to a heavy dinner.

6. modify your favorite treats!

Replacing high calorie ingredients with lower ones can literally save you thousands of fat and sugar calories over the holidays. For example: replace your fattening store bought dip with low fat sour cream or a non fat yogurt blended with a dip mix.

7. stay active!

It’s tempting to ditch your regular workouts as you become consumed with holiday preparations, parties and errands; but now more than ever, you need to stay active. Shorten your workout time with a circuit of cardio and weights together. One intense minute of movement, such as jumping jacks, coupled with squats is a great example of how to do this. It’s amazing how much your body can benefit from even 12 minutes of movement. Replace duration with intensity!

8. choose your plate size wisely!

Using a smaller plate, pile on the greens and slowly back away from the buffet table to a different part of the room. As they say, out of sight, out of mind. Use this time to catch up with friends and family; hopefully you will be having so much fun, you’ll forget about a second helping of grandma’s cookies.

A toast to Texas Wineries

It was a good year for Texas Wines

Take a moment to look back at the past year in the Texas wine industry because it’s been a significant one, which has provided a great foundation for future success in 2011 and the new decade. We look forward to working with you next year on food and wine news and events.

· New Wineries – this year saw the establishment of the 200th winery in the Lone Star State. At this time, there are 217 wineries, creating a statewide economic impact of more than $1.35 billion.

· Record Harvest – the 2010 Texas harvest was one for the record books. Production for 2010 was 8,900 tons, up 44 percent from a year ago, making Texas the seventh-largest grape producing state in the nation.

· Expanding Wine Grape Acreage – The Texas Department of Agriculture has also helped increase wine grape acreage. The Texas Wine Grape Investment Grant Program has provided grants to farmers and the assistance has added nearly 400 new acres across the state.

· Tex-Med Varieties – Texas grape growers are seeing promise in Mediterranean varieties that enjoy Texas’ hot days and cool nights. Over the coming years, wine enthusiasts can expect to enjoy some spectacular Texas wines made from Italy’s Aglianico, Montepulciano and Dolcetto, and Spain’s Tempranillo, Albarino, and Grenache, as well as southern France’s Marsanne, Syrah and Mourvedre.

· Texas Winery Passport Program – the Texas Department of Agriculture expanded the rewards program and added gifts from winery partners. Since October 2008, more than 20,000 consumers have redeemed their passports to earn rewards, which equals more than 80,000 winery visits. More than 1 million tourists visit Texas wineries each year.

· Big Tex and Texas Wines – the State Fair of Texas Wine Garden featured Texas wines, offering a popular attraction to the fair's more than 3 million visitors. The Wine Garden created more than $100,000 in sales of Texas wines.

· Texas Wines & GO TEXAN Restaurants – for the third year, the GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up offered consumers a sampling of the state’s best food and wines from nearly 400 restaurants. It’s exciting to see more and more restaurants adding Texas wines to their wine lists.

· Enjoying the National Spotlight – from the Grape and Gridiron Classic where Texas wines were put to the taste test and prevailed against New York wines to the many highly respected wine competitions where Texas wines have brought home the gold, Texas continues to receive accolades for the quality of its wines.

The new year also marks a new decade for Texas wine. With exponential growth in the number of wineries, Texas Wine Country visitors and economic impact from the industry, the prospects are exciting for the coming years. In the meantime, Go Out. Go Eat. GO TEXAN.

Looking forward to sharing a glass of Texas wine with you in 2011.

Cheers!

Follow Santa on Christmas Eve..........

Follow Santa on Christmas Eve..........

As part of a special partnership with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), OnStar subscribers can follow Santa Claus’ journey on Christmas Eve as he makes his way around the world in a single night.

Beginning on Christmas Eve at 6 a.m. EST, all subscribers have to do is push their blue OnStar button and ask for a “Santa Update.”An OnStar Advisor will be happy to provide updates on the jolly old elf’s journey using information provided by NORAD.

Individuals without an OnStar subscription can visit the NORAD Santa Tracker or call 877-HI-NORAD (1-877-446-6723) for Santa’s location.

I have always thought OnStar is magical. It has helped me find a Jamocha Shake at Arby's in a strange town. They helped me discover the nearest thrift shop. They take all my requests seriously (even when I know they are a big strange) and are beyond politely helpful. It is sort of like having a friend in cyberspace when you push the blue button

EIGHT TIPS TO BREWING UP THE PERFECT COFFEE for a party

1. Be your own barista. Create a coffee house vibe and offer guests tasty toppings like cinnamon, cocoa, nutmeg, ginger and flavored creamers. Take advantage of the different varieties of Eight O’Clock Coffee ranging from its most popular varieties of Original, 100% Colombian and French Roast to more festive choices like Hazelnut, French Vanilla, Mocha and Dark Italian Roast.

2. Coffee can be enjoyed any time. Break tradition – hosts don’t have to wait until the end of the meal to begin brewing. Welcome guests to a warm, cozy home filled with the fragrant aroma of coffee. Visitors won’t be able to resist a cup the minute they remove their coats.

3. Open before the holidays. Don’t wait until the night of your soiree to unveil that brand new French press. Play it safe and test out new coffee makers and brewing gadgets long before company comes.

4. Chilled and on the rocks. Skip the soda and cool down your coffee with coffee flavored ice cubes prepared prior to your party. Or, break out the blender and make frozen beverages if feeling adventurous.

5. Eight O’Clock to go. Stock up on holiday-themed to go cups with lids and send guests home with a fresh cup of Coffee for the road – a must for visitors with a long ride ahead.

6. Don’t forget the decaffeinated. Prepare for caffeine-conscious guests and stock up on Eight O’Clock’s Decaffeinated Original, Decaffeinated 100% Colombian or 50% Decaf.

7. Coffee for large parties. If brewing coffee in a high-capacity urn, consider storing and serving coffee in carafes after brewing. Carafes keep coffee hot and fresh, while urns may “burn” your brew over time.

8. BYOC – be unique and bring coffee. While most partygoers bring wine, you’ll be as distinct and tasteful as your gift.

Male Habits during the Holidays

In these trying economic times, it’s no surprise that one of the top New Year’s Resolutions for men in America is to save money. But a shocking new study shows that while men want to reign in their expenses, they'll still splurge when it comes to their sweethearts, even if it's at the expense of dear old mom. According to a nationwide poll conducted by Maxim Magazine and Hornitos™ Premium Tequila, a whopping 46% of men are planning on spending upwards of $350 on the women in their lives this holiday season, but at a breakdown of $250 for significant other and a mere $100 for mom.

The data, culled from more than 3,000 men offers a rare glimpse into the male psyche and the holiday habits of the typical, male instigator. Aside from gauging holiday spending habits, questions were asked about men's favorite holiday movies, how many parties they will attend this holiday season, the one gift they want to receive most and many more.

Among the results:

- The top New Year’s Resolution for this year is to save cash (44%), with only 36% of respondents resolving “hit the gym more.” Fortunately for Snooki and the gang, a mere 9% vow "to quit watching 'Jersey Shore'," so we can assume the series is safe for Season 3.

- 46% of guys claim they’ll spend $250 on gifts for their significant other and only $100 on gifts for their mom. Maybe it's time for a reminder of how she took care of you when you were sick in the 4th grade!

- While holiday instigators are planning on spending big bucks on gifts (and expect the same in return), booze far outweigh their interest in electronics and gadgets, with a substantial 63% of men picking a bottle of premium tequila as their most wanted gift this season over an iPad (21%) or xBox (9%). And don’t you dare get him clothing, as only a mere 7% want to receive duds this holiday season!

-Angelina Jolie is the number one fantasy date to the typical guy’s office party (48%) besting Natalie Portman (19%) and Megan Fox (20%) by more than double.

- The holiday cult classic and oft-marathoned “A Christmas Story” (46%) handily beat out “Big” (21%) and “It’s a Wonderful Life” (20%) as the instigator's favorite holiday film, proving every man, no matter the age, still covets a BB gun.

Will Queen Elizabeth's Underpants sell higher than other celeb Underpants?

We all know Victoria’s Secret but what’s the Queen Mum hiding? When looking to surprise your loved one this holiday season, why not look to the latest trend in undergarments…celebrity underwear auctions!

Prince sold a pair of briefs on a video set for $20. Michael Jackson’s tighty whities started off with a bid of $1 million on eBay. And Queen Victoria’s royal undergarments went for $9000. Now the auctioneers at Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers are hoping to re-create the magic of the “Victoria’s Secret” sale with the announcement of the sale of Queen Elizabeth II pair of underpants.

Predicto Mobile, the largest paid mobile subscriber community with over 2 million nationwide active users voting on popular topics in the current news, celebrity world and sports determined that 76% of the public believes that Queen Elizabeth II's underpants will sell for over $9000 while the rest believes it won’t.

Will a pair of underpants that belonged to Queen Elizabeth II go for more than $9,000 at auction by 2/1?

No – 24%

Yes – 76%

Dale’s Pale Ale Hot Sauce: Chipotle hot sauce infused with Dale's Pale Ale.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside
For those cold-loving beer snobs Oskar Blues serves up the EVOLUTION of craft beer offering 6 quality craft brews in a can for any beer-craving palette. Oskar Blues defines the “Canned Beer Apocolypse” that challenges what is expected from craft beer in a can. BYOB, Bring Your Oskar Blues.

Dales Pale Ale: America’s first hand-canned craft beer is a voluminously hopped mutha that delivers a hoppy nose and assertive-but-balanced flavors of pale malts and hops from start to finish. First canned in 2002, Dales Pale Ale is a hearty (6.5% and 65 IBUs), critically acclaimed trailblazer that has changed the way craft beer fiends perceive canned beer. Available in a four-pack, Dales retails for $8.99.

Mama’s Little Yella Pils: An uncompromising, small-batch version of the beer that made Pilsen, Czech Republic famous. Unlike mass market “pilsners” diluted with corn and rice, Mama’s is built with 100% pale malt, German specialty malts, and Bavarian hopes. While it’s rich with Czeched-out flavor, its gentle hopping (35 IBUs) and low ABV (just 5.3%) make it a luxurious but low-dose refresher. Available in a four-pack, Mama’s retails for $8.99

Old Chub: This jaw-dropping Scottish strong ale (8% ABV) is brewed with bodacious amounts of malted barley and specialty grains, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malt. Old Chub features a skim-milk mouthfeel, semi-sweet flavors of cocoa coffee, and a kiss of smoke. A head-turning treat for malt heads and folks who think they don’t dig dark beer. Available in a four-pack, Old Chub retails for $8.99.

Gordon: A luscious, double-red ale with a gooey aroma, a sticky mouthfeel, a malty middle and unctuous hop flavors. Gordon also sports a surprisingly comfortable finish for a beer of its hefty size (8.7% ABV, 60 IBUs). It’s brewed in tribute to Gordon Knight, a Colorado craft beer pioneer and Vietnam vet who died fighting a 2002 wild fire outside of Oskar Blues’ hometown of Lyons. Available in a four-pack, Gordon retails for $11.99.

TenFIDY: This titanic, immensely viscous stout is loaded with neck-deep flavors of chocolate, malted milk, cocoa and oats. The beer equivalent of a decadent chocolate milkshake, Ten FIDY (10% ABV) is made with enormous amounts of two-row malt, chocolate malt, flaked oats and hopes. It is the ultimate celebration of dark malts and boundary-stretching beer. Available in a four-pack, Ten FIDY retails for $14.99.

GUBNA Imperial Pale Ale: Emphasizing that complexity of character can arise from simple elements, this ale is made with 3 malts and 1 hop. A larger than life beer (10% ABV, 100 IBUs), the GUBNA will greet you with a pungent citrus blast, provide a spicy yet round middle and finish with a brisk, clean bitterness. Available in a four-pack, GUBNA retails for $14.99.

Set in the heart of Colorado craft beer country, Oskar Blues Brewery in Lyons began canning its beers in November of 2002 with a hand-canning line in the 60- year-old barn next door to their funky little brewpub. Although it’s now a full- throttle canning operation that is quickly expanding its cult-like following across the nation, Oskar Blues remains true to its original mission of simply blowing minds with what can come out of a can of beer.

ABOUT OSKAR BLUES
Three-dimensional brewing since 1999, Oskar Blues began the “Canned Beer Apocalypse” in 2002 when Dale’s Pale Ale became America’s 1st CANNED craft beer.

DALLAS SUMMER MUSICALS, PRESENTED BY COMERICA BANK,
ANNOUNCES 71ST SEASON OF THE BEST OF BROADWAY

Dallas Summer Musicals, Inc. (DSM), presented by Comerica Bank, has announced their 71st season lineup, with seven touring Broadway productions coming to the Music Hall at Fair Park in 2011. DSM has been entertaining North Texas audiences with the finest in professional live theatrical entertainment since 1941.

In announcing the new season, Michael A. Jenkins, President and Managing Director of Dallas Summer Musicals, said, “With seven successful decades of presenting musical theater behind us, we
look forward to the 2011 season with great optimism. Our wealth of past experience in theater operations has provided thoughtful guidance to the decisions made for this 71st season, and will position DSM for a bright future. We understand the current economic climate is a consideration every household is evaluating this year, and, in response, we have reduced the number of shows in the season and the ticket prices in order to make it more affordable to you in these tough times.”

“The season includes recent Broadway shows such as 9 TO 5, BURN THE FLOOR, GUYS AND DOLLS, and WEST SIDE STORY, and perennial favorite MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT. We are delighted to present a season special opening by Texas’ own Tommy Tune in STEPS IN TIME, WITH THE MANHATTAN RHYTHM KINGS, and will also return the unique sounds of STOMP for a one-week special.”

Dallas Summer Musicals, Inc. (DSM) is the preeminent non-profit presenter of Broadway theater in North Texas. DSM produces, presents and promotes excellence in live musical theater with year-round performances for diverse audiences of all ages, impacting the lives of children and families through community outreach and education, and enriching the cultural landscape of Dallas/Fort Worth, North Texas and the Southwest Region. DSM is the largest producer and presenter of live theatrical entertainment in the Southwest, the second oldest summer theater organization in the United States, and the fourth largest non-profit theater company. DSM SEASON AT THE MUSIC HALL AT FAIR PARK

TOMMY TUNE STEPS IN TIME, WITH THE MANHATTAN RHYTHM KINGS, March 15-20, 2011. Broadway’s Super Star Song and Dance man, Tommy Tune hits the stage high stepping through his nine-time Tony® Award winning career. Celebrating 50 years on the Great White Way, Native Texan Tune sings, dances, and laughs his way through those glorious musical moments that made him a Theatre Legend. Backed by the multi-talented Manhattan Rhythm Kings, Tune’s unique and masterful Broadway Biography in song and dance leaves audiences standing, cheering, and dancing in the aisles. Tommy Tune is “The quintessential Broadway song and dance man,” according to Variety Weekly.

BURN THE FLOOR, April 5-17, 2011. Direct from Broadway, the new Broadway production proclaimed “Audience-Dazzling!” by The New York Times, brings back Ballroom Dancing, reinvented. Years before “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance” turned ballroom dancing into must-see TV, one sizzling show was setting stages ablaze around the globe. The electrifying Latin and Ballroom dance spectacular that has thrilled audiences in more than 30 countries brings the fire and passion of their live performance to Dallas.

9 TO 5: THE MUSICAL, May 18-29, 2011. This musical is the most fun you will have all season, with its hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era. The new musical comedy, direct from Broadway, is based on the hit movie and features Dolly Parton’s original hit title song along with her new Tony® Award and Grammy® nominated score. The book is by Patricia Resnick, co-writer of the original screenplay, and tells the story of three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company, learning there is nothing they can’t do, even in a man’s world. Outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, 9 TO 5: THE MUSICAL is about teaming up and taking care of business….it’s about getting credit and getting even…and it’s about to open in Dallas.

STOMP, June 7-12, 2011. This one-week special returns to the Music Hall at Fair Park with new surprises! Explosive, provocative, sophisticated, sexy, and utterly unique, STOMP appeals to audiences of all ages. The international percussion sensation has garnered an armful of awards and rave reviews, and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments—matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps—to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. USA Today said, “STOMP finds beautiful noises in the strangest places.” See what all the noise is about.

MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT, June 14-26, 2011. The second coming of Broadway’s #1 Musical Comedy Smash, called “A No-Holds-Barred Smash Hit” by The New Yorker. The funniest show on earth is back to taunt Dallas for a second time. Winner of the 2005 Tony® Award for Best Musical, SPAMALOT, the musical comedy sensation lovingly ripped off from the film classic “Monty Python and The Holy Grail,” now returns to spread laughter and cheer throughout the kingdom. SPAMALOT tells the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. But before they can find their grail, they’re taking a little side-trip to the fair city of Dallas.

GUYS AND DOLLS, July 19-31, 2011. Big League Productions is proud to announce a sparkling new production of the timeless Broadway classic, GUYS AND DOLLS. Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, this oddball romantic comedy—considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy—soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to the cast of vivid characters who have become legends in the canon. The New York Times calls it “The show that defines Broadway dazzle!” The New York Post said, “If you have one musical to see, make it this…and make it quick.” “GUYS AND DOLLS is one of those pivotal events in Broadway’s history. A phenomenon.” New York Magazine. From the Hollywood motion picture version starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra to the acclaimed Broadway revivals, GUYS AND DOLLS remains a classic masterpiece that will please everyone from musical theater scholars to fans of The Sopranos and everyone in between.

WEST SIDE STORY, October 4-23, 2011, is also the 2011 State Fair of Texas musical. “Bold, fresh and transcendent,” said The New Yorker. More than 50 years ago, one musical changed theater forever. Back on Broadway mesmerizing audiences once again, from the first note to the final breath, WEST SIDE STORY soars as the greatest love story of all time. Directed by two-time Tony® Award winning librettist Arthur Laurents, WEST SIDE STORY remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The new Broadway cast album recently won the 2010 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Show Album. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway’s finest, featuring such classics of the American musical theater as “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.” “So exciting it makes you ache with pleasure,” according to John Lahr, The New Yorker.

Weather and Wine

For the past week, an icy situation has been worrying many growers in key
Argentinean wine valleys: the much feared zonda and later frost. According to
experts, this current climate event could generate losses in production of
wine grapes from 25% to 30%, reports AndesWines.com

The latest reports show that micro wine growing regions Agrelo, Sur de La
Consulta, Ugarteche y Altamira have resulted affected in specific areas.

This year’s frost has been the largest one in years, say local growers.
Nonetheless, AndesWines reports that enologists and wine producers are
expecting grape prices to stay below record levels because of last year’s
price spike, especially in the areas that produce Premium grapes.

Familia Catena’s chief enologist, Alejandro Vigil, explained to
AndesWines.com that the frost destroyed many recent sprouts and that the
weather conditions drew humidity of the zones, allowing the rime to stay
longer.

The CEO of Bodega Melipal, Santiago Santamaría, added that operations in
Agrelo, region with a small frost history and where the company’s head
operations are located, will register small losses in Merlot, while some
Malbec lots will also have to be downsized.

The chief enologist from Bodega Kaikén, Eduardo Alemparte, explained that
the current frost episode was more intense and longest than in previous
years, with temperatures dropping to -4°C in some areas.

Alemparte insisted that “the previous frost did not affect us so much,
because for many of the varieties , at least in the first region and in
the Uco valley, the vines hadn’t blossomed yet. I think there will not be
a setback to the sprouts, they will recover but we will have to wait to
see if there were any damages to the fruit. I do believe it’s highly
unlikable because they were in a pre-blooming state”.

BETWEEN 25% TO 30% OF ARGENTINEAN WINE GRAPE PRODUCTION COULD BE LOST TO FROSTY WEATHER CONDITIONS
